Canada's Drug Problem
Certain drugs range in popularity by country and region. Which are most prevalent in Canada and who is using them?
While drug abuse is rampant and cuts across all borders, specific drugs range in popularity by region. In Canada, there are several drugs of choice. While meth, ecstasy and marijuana/marihuana remain strong exports, many drugs never leave the country.
The market for cocaine has remained relatively stable, but there is a rise in liquid cocaine seizures in recent years, suggesting a rise in usage here at home. Also popular is khat, with usage for that concentrated within Central Canada, particularly within larger urban centers where large Eastern-African communities are found. Authorities have particularly noticed an increase in khat seizures in the Prairies.
HEROIN USE IN CANADA
Heroin is another growing problem. The dominance of Southwest Asian heroin has steadily increased since the early millennium, with Southeast Asia being replaced as the primary source region.
CANADA DRUG INGREDIENTS
While many drugs are produced in Canada, the ingredients used aren’t all local. India and China are predominant suppliers of what are called "precursor chemicals," those substances acquired by Canadian organized crime groups for the manufacture of drugs like methamphetamine and MDMA (ecstasy).
Like many other countries, the types of drugs that are popular may change from year to year and vary by region, but the need for education and treatment are universal.
