The Roots of Addiction

Roots of addictionEvery good gardener knows, if you don't pull weeds out by the roots, they're just going to spring back up. It's only a matter of time. It's the same when dealing with an addiction. You can try to stop the behavior, white-knuckling your way through an at-home detox, but this approach rarely has lasting results.

The problem is you've only managed to get rid of the top of the weed. Things look good on the surface, but underneath, those roots are as strong as ever. Soon enough, the problem has grown back, probably bigger than before.

To really deal with a drug or alcohol problem, you need to get to the root of the issue. That means digging deep (to continue the garden analogy). You need to find out what makes you want to use in addition to the physical dependence.

This is where integrated treatment comes into play. By treating not just an addiction but the underlying issues that led to or contributed to that urge to use is the only way to find real, lasting recovery. It requires getting dirty, but the results are worth it.
