HISTORY OF THE HOTEL DEL CORONADO
The Hotel del Coronado is one of the few surviving examples of the wooden Victorian beach resort, an American architectural genre. Nicknamed "The Del" or "Hotel del," this luxury hotel is in the city of Coronado, just across the San Diego Bay from San Diego. It is one of the oldest and largest all-wooden buildings in California.
The historic 19th century hotel was the largest resort hotel in the world when it opened and the first to use electrical lighting. It's no surprise then that it has hosted presidents, royalty and celebrities throughout the years. This scenic building has also been featured in at least a dozen films, including Some Like It Hot (starring Marilyn Monroe) and My Blue Heaven (starring Steve Martin).
The story of how the hotel came to be is almost as interesting as the building itself. The Hotel del Coronado was built while the San Diego region was in the midst of one of its first real estate booms. At that time, it was common for a developer to build a grand hotel as a draw for what would otherwise be a barren landscape. On December 19, 1885, retired railroad executive Elisha S. Babcock, Hampton L. Story of the Story and Clark Piano Company of Chicago, and Jacob Gruendike, president of the First National Bank of San Diego, joined forces to buy all of Coronado and North Island for $110,000. Babcock, Story and Gruendike then formed the Coronado Beach Company, adding several partners and hiring Canadian architect James W. Reid. Much of the labor was provided by Chinese immigrants from San Francisco and Oakland.
The original grounds had many amenities, including an Olympic-sized salt-water pool, tennis courts and a yacht club with architecture resembling the hotel's grand tower. A Japanese tea garden, an ostrich farm, billiards, bowling alleys, hunting expeditions and deep-sea fishing were some of the other many features offered to its guests. The Crown Room was Reid's masterpiece. Its wooden ceiling was installed with pegs and glue -- not a single nail was used.
The hotel was such a status symbol that Thomas Edison inspected the final electrical installation personally and returned in 1904 to oversee the nation's first illuminated outdoor Christmas tree, which was placed on the hotel's lawn.
A hotel of this magnitude was an obvious draw for the rich and famous. The hotel's more famous guests include Presidents Harrison, McKinley, Taft, Wilson, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, George Bush, George W. Bush, Clinton and Obama. Other notable visitors include Rudolph Valentino, Charlie Chaplin, Vincent Price and Babe Ruth. The hotel became a Hollywood playground during the Prohibition era, and Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum did much of his writing there too. There was even speculation that Prince Edward first met Wallis Simpson, his future wife, at a grand banquet held on April 7, 1920, in the Crown Room to honor the prince.
This famous hotel welcomes attendees of the Freedom and Recovery Conference 2012 and serves as the perfect venue for conference events and activities.
