Freedom & Recovery 2012: Special Guest Speakers

Sergeant Dakota MeyerSERGEANT DAKOTA MEYER

Ticket info This U.S. Marine veteran was recently awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration, by President Obama. Obama described the former Marine sergeant as representing "the best of a generation that has served with distinction through a decade of war," adding, "You did your duty above and beyond, and you kept the faith with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps you love." He is the third living recipient of the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War, and the first living United States Marine in 38 years to be so honored.

Sergeant Meyer served in both Iraq and Afghanistan but his most notable efforts occurred in September 2009. During the attack near Ganjgal, with disregard for his own life, Sgt. Meyer help to evacuate both trapped and wounded soldiers. He insists that he is not a hero and any Marine would do the same thing. Back home, this highly decorated service member has issued a "Challenge to America" to raise an additional $1 Million for the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

J.R. MartinezJ.R. MARTINEZ

You might recognize J.R. Martinez from the daytime drama All My Children or his triumphant turn on Dancing With the Stars. Others know him from his roles as a motivational speaker and former U.S. Army Infantryman. One thing is for sure, no matter how you were introduced to Martinez, he's not someone you forget.

Jose Rene (J.R.) Martinez was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and grew up dreaming of a career as a professional football player, but a high school injury derailed those plans. In 2002, he enlisted in the US Army, a decision that would change the course of his life in ways he couldn't imagine.

Martinez was deployed to Iraq in February 2003. Two months later, the Humvee he was driving was hit by an IED. He suffered smoke inhalation and severe burns to more than 40 percent of his body. Martinez spent 34 months at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, where he underwent 33 cosmetic and skin-graft surgeries.

During his time in recovery, a nurse asked Martinez to speak to a burn patient who had just seen his body for the first time and had become withdrawn. Martinez agreed, and was touched when he saw firsthand the positive impact he could have on others. He began visiting patients in the hospital, sharing his story and listening to theirs. This grew into a successful career as a public speaker. Martinez continued to educate and inspire when he began portraying Brot Monroe on ABC's All My Children in 2008. It's a character that mirrors his true life as a US Army veteran injured in combat in Iraq.

Martinez's inspirational story has been covered by dozens of media outlets including The Washington Post, People magazine, 60 Minutes and CNN. Martinez has also been honored by numerous nonprofit and veterans groups. The inspiring veteran-turned-actor also won season 13 of Dancing With the Stars.

Special Evening Event
J.R. Martinez will speak on the evening of Wednesday, April 25th at 6 p.m. in the Crown room of the Hotel del Coronado. This event will conclude with an interactive Q&A time.

Tickets are available to conference attendees and the general public for $50 each. Those who register for the conference before March 10th will receive a complimentary ticket to this special evening event!
