FRN’s research study reveals the benefits of individualized, abstinence-based residential treatment for opiate users.

June 17, 2014 (Nashville, TN) – Foundations Recovery Network (FRN) has been invited to present the results of a research study on outcomes for opiate users at the Global Addiction Conference in Rome, Italy, this year. Siobhan A. Morse, MHSA, Director of Quality and Research at FRN, will be giving a presentation on the similarities between opiate and non-opiate users, how different age groups approach treatment and what methods based on this study have proven effective for treating opiate users.

The Global Addiction Conference is presented by the Global Addiction Association as one of its international venues for increasing knowledge among treatment professionals and medical providers to further the understanding and treatment of addiction. The Global Addiction website, GlobalAddiction.org, states, “For 2014, in Europe, Global Addiction will retain its focus on the impact on society of addiction, including policy initiatives targeted at dealing with the difficulties associated with addictions.” The conference will focus on process addictions such as gambling, sex addiction and video game addiction, and it will also address the growing prescription drug addiction problem and the rise of designer drug abuse. The Global Addiction Conference is a highly renowned event, revered for its groundbreaking presentations and notable speakers.

Individualized treatment within a standard, abstinence-based, residential treatment model can be effective for opiate users.

The paper describing FRN’s research study comprises the work of Samuel A. MacMaster, PhD, Siobhan A. Morse, MHSA, John Seiters, BA, Cayce M. Watson, MSSW, and Sam Choi, PhD. As stated in the abstract accepted by the Global Addiction Conference, “The study seeks to determine what, if any, meaningful differences exist between opiate and non-opiate users who enter voluntary, private, residential treatment, and the impact of any differences relative to treatment motivation, length and outcomes. Data for the study was drawn from 1,972 individuals, utilizing the Addiction Severity Index, the Treatment Service Review, the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment, and a satisfaction measure. Interviews were conducted at program intake, and one and six month interviews post-discharge. … Overall, results suggest that individualized treatment within a standard, abstinence-based, residential treatment model can be effective across opiate users at different ages and with different issues, levels of severity and impairment at intake.”

The Global Addiction Conference takes place in Rome, Italy, June 24-26, 2014. Get a preview of the presentation here.
