For this episode, I met with Dr. Philip Hemphill, the Chief Clinical Officer at Lakeview Health treatment center. He joined me for this interview at the Recovery Results conference in Dallas, where he spoke on transforming addiction treatment by implementing an integrative health model and using real-world data to inform decision-making.

Lakeview’s belief in the importance of integrative health originated as a response to a need in the industry. “Unfortunately, they have not done an adequate job of assessing mental health and substance use disorders in the medical industry,” Hemphill says. “Our goal here is…why not have the people who are in behavioral health and substance use do a robust medical intervention? So that’s what we’ve committed to.”

And this commitment to integrative health extends beyond the patients to Lakeview’s staff, allowing employees to take advantage of the wellness facilities and even the therapy groups. “So the staff gets to participate in the sense of wellness because we believe that if you take care of the staff members, they will ultimately take care of the patients,” Hemphill believes.

One way that Lakeview continually seeks to improve is by adapting its treatment to meet patient needs using real data from their own facility. For example, they recently established new gender-specific programs because their data told them that it would help their patients focus. “We found that there was a lot of interference, a lot of static, a lot of background noise when we had the genders mixed,” Hemphill explains. “So we made a commitment about a year ago that we needed to do something different.” And their latest data has already shown marked improvement among patients in those gender-specific programs.

Another method of utilizing data that Lakeview employs is “fidelity measurements” to ensure that the program’s pillars are being implemented on the ground level. “So the leaders of the organization do intermittent checks on the different groups,” Hemphill clarifies. “Are they using motivational interviewing techniques? Are they using integrative language? Are they using positive language?”
